Bears have always fascinated people. They are strong, mysterious, and often seen as symbols of power and wisdom. Many of us feel a deep bond with bears; they evoke feelings of awe and admiration. But what makes bears truly remarkable?

Set amongst the rugged mountains and crystal-clear lakes of Canada's Banff region, we meet a Grizzly bear named the Boss, also known as Bear 122. His legendary and iconic status, as the biggest, most powerful of his species, ignites our curiosity within the animal kingdom. As a bear cub, we first meet the Boss learning how to survive the harshest of environments through his mother’s guidance. Further stages in the Boss’s life are played out through highly entertaining segments of action. The Boss isn’t without his rivals, notably Split Lip, who is a constant thorn in the paw of our hero. Split Lip (Bear 136) may not match the Boss for size and strength, but this doesn’t stop him challenging for bear hierarchy.

Search ‘Boss Bear Alberta' and you find he’s miraculously survived two high speed altercations with passing railroad grain trains. The scene is cleverly portrayed by ‘human trains' adding an element of vulnerability to an otherwise light-hearted production. The unconventional and often surreal approach is represented by flamboyant characters including a Real Estate Agent, TV News Reporter, Sports Commentator and a Human ‘Satnav’. Amongst cameo appearances we meet Winnie the pooh, Paddington bear, Baloo bear, Rupert the bear, Fozzie bear, Yogi bear and some cute Care Bears.

Our admiration for the Boss is highlighted when he mischievously pays a visit to some populated areas in Alberta. Searching for food he gives the audience a very close up view of proceedings. Be warned, if you are munching on a snack during the performance! The play features multi-instrumentalist ‘Wave Machine’ who has composed some highly original music. With lyrics capturing significant milestones in the life of the Boss, the uplifting songs transport you directly to the valleys and mountains of Alberta. The opportunity to raise awareness on conservation of the grizzly bear species is a common theme. This is expertly delivered through a narrator, combining factual information with on stage antics. The message is clear; we can all influence the protection of these iconic and charismatic animals. The Boss bear is a unique production where cast members will relish the opportunity of transferring the bear kingdom to the stage.
